About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Nerello Mascalese comes from the Sciaranuova vineyard at Castiglione di Sicilia (CT), planted directly on the lava flow created by the eruption that began in 1614. The vineyard lies at 840–860 metres above sea level. Its well-positioned, favorably exposed ground consists of black lava sands exceptionally rich in minerals, with an abundant structure of large fragments. Woodland and more recent lava flows surround the site.
The vines are trained on espalier using spurred-cordon and double-spurred-cordon pruning. Cultivation follows organic-agriculture criteria and SOStain® protocols. Wildflower ground cover adds organic matter and supports soil microfauna. Plant health is managed with small quantities of sulphur and copper, while useful insects, mating disruption, zeolite, kaolin and plant extracts provide natural protection against pests.

Tasting profile
A deeply aromatic mountain red shaped by its lava-sand soils. Incense, medicinal herbs, hibiscus and wild fennel lead the aromatic profile, followed by generous wild fruit, currants and beeswax. The wine combines luminosity and finesse with compact yet elegant tannins. A subtle saline impression refreshes the finish and invites another sip.
Label / history
The name recalls the eruption that began in 1614 and continued for ten years—the longest eruption recorded in Etna’s history. The vines grow on the resulting lava flow. The first vintage was 2010.
