A New Look After 125 Years
Planning beyond the 125th anniversary
The 2020 anniversary became an opportunity to consider how the estate could protect its history while improving environmental performance, customer experience and wine consistency over the next 125 years.
Lighter, locally sourced glass
Because glass represents an estimated 40% of a wine bottle’s total carbon emissions, Seghesio standardized its portfolio in early 2020 around a lighter bottle made by a California manufacturer. Each bottle weighs 496 g, 18% less than the previous format, and combines 30% recycled glass with entirely California-sourced raw materials. The annual reduction in glass use is approximately 156 tonnes. Local production also reduces overseas transport and provides greater resilience against global supply disruption.
Closures and consistency
Past cork taint may have affected as much as 10% of production. New micro-agglomerated corks are treated to remove the compounds responsible, reducing bottle variation while retaining the traditional act of pulling a cork and providing consistent conditions for ageing.
Labels and hospitality
The tasting room gained new seating and an Italian-bistro-inspired appearance. Wines from the 2019 vintage released in 2021–2022 introduced updated packaging. Core visual elements of the Zinfandel labels were retained but made more legible and coherent across the range. Single-vineyard labels took inspiration from classic Barolo designs associated with Piedmont, while the Italian Heritage labels were reorganized into a more unified family with details intended to distinguish each wine.
