Forty years of Bucerchiale: historical context and technical change
The account describes Bucerchiale as a southwest-facing podere historically devoted to mixed farming. Selvapiana began bottling after the First World War, sold wine in Milan and Rome between the wars and lost its old bottle collection during the German occupation. In 1979, the family bottled Bucerchiale separately as pure Sangiovese even though Trebbiano remained compulsory under Chianti rules. The wine moved from chestnut casks to smaller oak and heavier extraction in the 1990s and early 2000s, then toward less extraction and a 50:50 division between French oak barriques and large casks from 2018.
