Baia al Vento Bolgheri Superiore 2018: a DOC, a Supertuscan

Baia al Vento Bolgheri Superiore DOC was presented within the production logic of a Supertuscan and as the estate’s most ambitious oenological expression at the time. Its vineyards lie only a few metres above sea level, upstream from the coast in a historically favoured part of Bolgheri. Yields are balanced to favour the vineyard’s expression.

After the difficult 2017 season, 2018 restored a more regular balance and allowed harvest timing to be adjusted without major climatic adversity. Merlot was picked after reaching the desired phenolic content, dry extract and sugar concentration. A long fermentation was followed by a brief period of maturation and clarification in stainless steel during November to remove coarse lees. The wine then entered a prolonged maturation in toasted wood in a temperature-controlled barrel room, with very few rackings.
