Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC: storia, caratteristiche e abbinamenti

History and identity

The article traces the cultural history of Abruzzo red wine to Polybius's account of Hannibal offering wine from the land of the Pretuzi to his soldiers during the Punic Wars. It also recalls Molon's early-20th-century discussion of a southern Italian variety sometimes confused with Sangiovese but considered distinct. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo received DOC recognition through the presidential decree of 24 May 1968, published on 15 July 1968.

The grape is explicitly distinguished from the Tuscan town of Montepulciano and its Vino Nobile, which is based on Sangiovese. Abruzzo's Montepulciano is later ripening and associated with structured, long-lived wines.

Growing environment and character

The production landscape runs from mountain and hill country to the Adriatic coast across a relatively compact area. Vineyards are described at approximately 150–600 m, commonly on sandy-clay soils, though conditions vary by zone. The Adriatic, Gran Sasso, Maiella and cold Balkan breezes create a temperate climate and temperature variation favourable to ripening.

Typical sensory features include deep ruby and purple colours that evolve toward garnet; aromas of woodland fruit, plum, black cherry and violet; and spice such as vanilla, pepper and clove after maturation in barrel or barrique. The palate combines substantial structure and tannin with softness, acidity and persistence.

Service and pairing

Mature versions are paired with red meat, game, grilled meat, braises, meat ragù and mature cheese; younger versions with meat-based first courses, pork or lamb grills and younger Pecorino cheese. Regional pairings include arrosticini, spaghetti alla chitarra with small meatballs, potato gnocchi, and sagne e fagioli with pork rind. Suggested serving temperatures are 16°C for young wine and 18–20°C for aged or riserva styles, in a broad glass that supports aeration.

The production rules regulate environmental conditions, planting density, pruning, forcing, irrigation, yields, natural alcoholic strength, vinification area, ageing, release and packaging. Tenuta Ulisse connects its own Montepulciano collection with the innovative path begun by the family in 2006.
