The medieval landscape of Palaia

The hills around the estate are described as a landscape shaped over centuries of human activity. Their present agricultural structure derives from a medieval network designed for both production and territorial control, and the fragmented distribution of vineyards still reflects that organisation. Beneath it lies an ancient Pliocene seabed rich in sand, fossils and shells. Its rapid drainage encourages deep rooting and controlled vine stress, while vineyard roots and biodiversity help counter erosion and maintain the stability of a fragile terrain.
