The memory of mixed farming

The article revisits the pre-specialisation structure of the Tuscan countryside, where vines, olive trees, cereals and other crops formed an integrated system. Mixed cultivation distributed risk, maintained a more varied habitat and linked agricultural production with the needs of rural communities. This historical model is connected with contemporary interest in biodiversity, crop rotation and resilient farming rather than proposed as a literal return to the past.
