Montefili and the Unione Viticoltori di Panzano in Chianti
The article frames farming through the principle of giving to the land in order to receive from it. Panzano’s Galestro-rich soils, measured clay content, elevation, intense light and favourable microclimate provide the setting for this work.
The Unione Viticoltori di Panzano in Chianti was founded in 1995 to unite growers committed to high-quality production and respect for vineyards, the environment and consumers. Montefili is identified as one of its 22 members.
The shared production principles include organic agriculture, protection of biodiversity and the health of workers and consumers. Practical measures include avoiding herbicides, synthetic fertilisers and other chemical products; using predatory insects against pests; and growing green-manure plants to maintain or increase soil fertility.
The Panzano area is presented as Italy’s first wine-growing biodistrict, with 90% of vineyards managed according to organic and biodynamic criteria. Agronomist Ruggero Mazzilli connects this approach not only with environmental protection but also with resistance to standardised wine styles, arguing that biologically sustainable work reinforces each wine’s aroma, flavour, colour and territorial identity. SPEVIS processes and interprets monitoring data collected in member vineyards.
