Winter pruning of the vineyard at Villa Le Corti

Winter pruning is carried out by hand across all 50 ha, requiring several weeks of work by the vineyard team. Twenty hectares are trained to Guyot and 30 ha to cordon spur, where two- or three-bud spurs are retained. Merlot uses cordon spur, while Sangiovese is divided between the two systems. Recently converted Sangiovese parcels use Guyot for its more homogeneous production and affinity with the traditional Tuscan arch.

Pruning is traditionally scheduled during the waning moon, when sap is considered less active. The aim is to avoid stimulating premature vegetative development and to support root and structural growth.

The 2024–2025 winter was milder than the historical average. Pruning was therefore performed carefully to avoid encouraging early growth that could later be damaged by frost.
