Aglianico del Vulture Superiore
4 cantine e 1 vino. In the north of Basilicata, in the province of Potenza, Aglianico grows on the slopes of Monte Vulture, a volcano that last erupted in the late Pleistocene and whose summit reaches 1,327 metres. Its eruptions began some 800,000 years ago, damming rivers, forming lakes that later dried out, and laying down alternating lava flows, volcanic tuff and sandy deposits. The tuff matters to the vine: it stores water through the dry summer. Continua a leggere ↓

Aglianico del Vulture Superiore in breve
Fifteen communes share the zone, among them Rionero in Vulture, Barile, Rapolla, Melfi, Venosa and Genzano di Lucania. Vineyards must stand on hillsides of mainly volcanic origin between 200 and 700 metres, facing mostly east and south-east, trained as bush vines or on simple trellises. The soils range from sandy and pozzolanic to silty clay. July and August are arid, June and September temperate, and October and November — when Aglianico is picked — damp, with 650 to 750 mm of rain a year on average.
The Superiore is made only from Aglianico del Vulture. It may not be sold before the first of November of the third year after the harvest, after at least twelve months in wood and twelve in bottle; a Riserva waits until the first of November of the fifth year. Aglianico del Vulture became a DOC in 1971, and its Superiore a DOCG in 2010.
