Cirò Classico in breve
The grape is Gaglioppo, the red variety most closely tied to Calabria, which must make up at least 90 per cent of the wine; the rest may only be Greco Nero or Magliocco, two other native reds. The choice reflects the producers' wish for a wine Calabrian in every part.
Cirò Classico is aged at least three years, including six months in wood, and must reach at least 13 per cent alcohol; it must also be bottled within the zone. The Cirò DOC dates from 1969; the European Union confirmed Cirò Classico as a DOCG in July 2025.
