Calabria

40 cantine, 74 vini e 10 denominazioni. Calabria is the toe of Italy's boot, running from the Strait of Messina north-east to the Gulf of Taranto, between the Tyrrhenian and the Ionian seas, with the mountains of the Pollino, the Sila and the Aspromonte down its spine. The Greeks who settled its coasts called southern Italy Oenotria — the land of vines — and the grapes they are thought to have brought still carry names like Greco. Continua a leggere ↓

Calabria in breve

Today it is a small producer. In 2022 Calabria made about 270,000 hectolitres from 8,921 hectares of vineyards, and its output has been slowly falling for at least a decade. More than three quarters of the wine is red, and only about an eighth is bottled under a DOC or DOCG.

The grape of the region is Gaglioppo, with 48 per cent of the vineyards, alongside other native reds such as Magliocco and Greco Nero. Its best-known wine is Cirò, from the Ionian hills of the province of Crotone, whose classic zone around Cirò and Cirò Marina became Calabria's first DOCG, Cirò Classico, in 2025. The region also has nine DOCs and ten IGPs.
