Aglianico del Taburno in breve
The rocks are Mesozoic and Tertiary dolomites and limestones, Tertiary sandstones and scaly varicoloured clays — brick-red, green and grey — and above all Quaternary volcanic and clastic deposits that blanket almost every hill and fill the hollows, mixing with the bedrock to form young, soft soils.
The wine must be at least 85 per cent Aglianico and comes as a red, a Riserva and a rosé. The red ages at least two years from the first of November of the harvest, the Riserva three, with at least twelve months in wood and six in bottle. The Samnites who lived here were already winemakers, and when Samnite families settled the Volturno valley in the late fifth century BC, the wine of Trebula Balliensis brought the area its prosperity. Aglianico del Taburno became a DOC in 1986 and a DOCG in 2011.
