30 years of Verduno Pelaverga DOC, the spicy wine of the Langhe
Verduno celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of Verduno Pelaverga DOC with the food-and-wine press. An institutional bottle was unveiled with Elisabetta Buglioni di Monale’s label “Once Upon a Time There Was the Sea Here,” depicting the Langhe from Verduno’s Belvedere. Sandro Minella of Verduno è Uno moderated the conference.
Ian D’Agata described the wine as a microcosm of Verduno’s laminated Sant’Agata marls, Cassano Spinola formations, gypsum veins, La Morra conglomerates and Tanaro influence. The denomination’s 1995 recognition grew from work led by mayor Renata Salvano and young producers, supported by scientific research involving the Universities of Milan and Turin, Seminario Veronelli and Dr Oberto. Six historic wineries completed the recognition process.
Giancarlo Montaldo reported growth from 7 ha, six producers and about 40,000 bottles in 1995 to more than 35 ha, 20 producers and over 260,000 bottles. Maurizio Petrozziello discussed the wine’s high rotundone concentration and sensory markers of black pepper, rose and raspberry.
