Barolo Monvigliero: the Verduno Grand Cru
Monvigliero is presented as Verduno’s reference cru, a roughly 25 ha natural amphitheatre at the northern boundary of the Barolo DOCG area. Its predominantly southern exposures lie around 250–300 m. The site forms a watershed between the Barolo hills and Tanaro valley, bringing constant circulation of humid river air.
Its laminated fossil-rich Sant’Agata marls form compact, fine layers rich in silt and clay, low in sand and able to retain water. Medicinal herbs, roots and spices are associated with the site’s identity. Giovan Battista Alessandria vinified the first pure Monvigliero in 1978; about twenty producers subsequently followed with their own interpretations.
