Speziale: thirty years of Verduno Pelaverga DOC
Pelaverga records in Verduno extend to the late fifteenth century, while local tradition associates the introduction of cuttings with Blessed Sebastiano Valfrè in the eighteenth century. The grape survived in small plots until several local producers began vinifying it separately in the 1970s. Verduno Pelaverga gained DOC recognition on October 20, 1995.
The estate’s name “Speziale” combines the ideas of being special and spicy, reflecting the variety’s pepper-like aromatic profile. At the denomination’s thirtieth anniversary, the article records approximately 30 ha, around 20 producers and production exceeding 200,000 bottles annually.
