Vineyard and terroir
Ventaglio is Tenuta Argentiera’s first single-vineyard wine. Its Cabernet Franc comes from 1.5 hectares of steep, fan-shaped rows overlooking the sea and arranged concentrically around a mature holm oak. Elevation ranges from 92 to 120 metres a.s.l. The vineyard includes north, northwest, west, southwest and south-facing parcels. Rocky clay contains abundant calcareous cobbles, a feature associated with the wine’s combination of complexity, structure and elegance. Planting density is 6,000 vines per hectare and the stated yield is 60 quintals of grapes per hectare.
Grapes
100% Cabernet Franc.
Vinification
The grapes are picked manually. Alcoholic fermentation and maceration last 25 days at a controlled 28–30°C in tapered French-oak vats. Malolactic conversion takes place in French and Austrian oak vessels and tonneaux.
Ageing
Maturation lasts 14 months in French and Austrian oak vessels and tonneaux, followed by 36 months in bottle.
Tasting profile
A structured, complex Cabernet Franc whose power is balanced by elegance. It is intended to evolve beyond its immediate fruit and texture, developing over time into a persistent and memorable expression of the sea-facing vineyard.
Vintage notes
The latest vintage presented is 2020. For the 2018 season, a mild but rainy opening was followed by a February cold spell reaching −6°C. Budbreak and shoot growth were late but even. Heavy May and June rainfall totalled 178 mm, while maritime breezes and the vineyard’s exposures helped protect the crop. Summer was dry and somewhat cooler than preceding seasons, allowing slow ripening. A sunny, dry September brought each micro-zone to suitable maturity. The southern parcel was harvested on 6 September and the northern parcel exactly one week later, on 13 September.
Label / history
The name refers to the vineyard’s fan-like shape. Ventaglio revives the estate’s long experience with varietal Cabernet Franc and is made in limited quantities only in selected vintages.
