Etruscan Grape Seeds

Archaeological work at Cetamura del Chianti has established the presence of vines in the area more than 2,300 years ago. Florida State University archaeologists led by Nancy T. de Grummond have worked at the settlement for over 50 years. Between 2012 and 2016, exceptionally well-preserved grape seeds were recovered from deep levels of Etruscan wells, where they were probably deposited as votive offerings.

Genetic analysis by the University of York indicates that the same white grape variety was cultivated for wine over several centuries, from the Etruscan into the Roman period. The results also indicate vegetative propagation by cuttings, demonstrating advanced agronomic knowledge. White grapes predominated, although red varieties were also present.

Artifacts from the excavations are held by the Chianti Origo museum in Gaiole in Chianti. The Stucchi Prinetti family owns the woodland containing the site and has supported the excavation. If continuing research establishes a genetic relationship between the ancient material and surviving grapes, the estate envisages a project to revive the variety that grew on these hills before Sangiovese became dominant.
