Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The vines, aged between 21 and 32 years, grow on well-exposed sites with medium-textured calcareous clay soils, which contribute power and elegance.
Grapes
The harmonious nine-variety blend includes ancient grapes traditionally grown around Gaiole-in-Chianti. Badia a Coltibuono spent many years studying and reviving Mammolo, Ciliegiolo, Colorino, Pugnitello, Sanforte, Malvasia Nera, Canaiolo and Foglia Tonda.
Vinification
Each variety is fermented separately in wooden vats with native yeasts. Natural fermentation develops complexity and harmony between the varieties. The wines are then pressed by hand to separate the juice from the pomace.
Ageing
The separate wines mature for 12–14 months in previously used barriques. After blending, the wine rests for at least another six months in oak barrels and approximately six months in bottle.
Tasting profile
Powerful and elegant, with notable depth, complexity and harmony.
Vintage notes
The 2016 winter in Tuscany was cool and wet. Flowering was generally successful, although damp conditions caused a slight reduction in yields. July and August were hot and dry. Harvest ran from 19 September to 7 October. September rain and pronounced differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures provided ideal conditions for the grapes to complete ripening. The season’s red wines were very well balanced, with exceptional aromas and well-integrated tannins.
