Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from 35- to 50-year-old vines planted on stony, clay-rich hilltops in Vincigliata, Olmo, Londa, Lamole, Montefili and vineyards around Siena. Each site has its own cool microclimate. Fruit from Olmo makes a particularly important contribution to the wine.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand, selected twice, destemmed and gently pressed. Each vineyard parcel is vinified separately. Fermentation occurs naturally in open oak barrels of various sizes, with the cap punched down by hand six to eight times daily. The process is kept as natural as possible and seeks to express the delicate, refined side of Sangiovese.
Ageing
The wine matures for at least 20 months in oak barrels. One percent of the barrels are replaced with new ones each year; the oldest date from 2003.
Tasting profile
The wine has purity, minerality and clarity, with fresh aromas.
Vintage notes
The 2021 growing season was generally warmer than 2020. The 2020, 2021 and 2022 vintages were all hot.
Label / history
“Testamatta” means “crazy head” or “madman” in Italian. The name reflects Bibi Graetz’s restless, expressive and creative character. Graetz trained at the Academy of Fine Arts and came from a family of artists before pursuing winemaking professionally. The wine is made in Fiesole, where the winery is located.
