Vineyard and terroir
The Sangiovese comes from selected plots in the hills around Orvieto, at elevations of 200–400 metres. The vineyards face southwest and have clay and stony soils. The Orvieto area has a distinctive microclimate.
Vinification
The grapes macerate on their skins for 10 days before fermentation. Stainless-steel tanks are used for fermentation, preserving the grape’s varietal character without the influence of oak.
Ageing
The wine ages in stainless-steel tanks rather than oak barrels.
Tasting profile
Soft and fruity, with an elegant aroma.
Label / history
The Bigi family’s winemaking history began in 1880 with Luigi Bigi, who helped bring recognition to the Orvieto region in Italy and abroad. The estate was formerly owned by the La Trinita monastery and stands on a hill of volcanic origin.
Vines have been cultivated around Orvieto since the time of the Etruscans. The first written record dates from 1292; three years later, an official committee called the “Guardians of the Vineyards” was established to protect vine quality. Local winemaking developments included a network of underground galleries and the practice of pressing grapes at ground level.
