Umbria in breve

In the wine world Umbria is best known for the white wine of one of those towns, Orvieto, built on a cliff of volcanic tuff and shared with Lazio, and for the red of another, Montefalco. Sangiovese is the most planted grape with 22 per cent of the vineyards, followed by Trebbiano at 17 and Grechetto at 13; Sagrantino, the tannic native red of Montefalco, is its most distinctive. In 2022 Umbria's 12,400 hectares made just under 600,000 hectolitres.

The region has two DOCGs, both reds: Montefalco Sagrantino and Torgiano Rosso Riserva, from the hill town of Torgiano near Perugia. Alongside them are thirteen DOCs, including Orvieto, Montefalco and Colli del Trasimeno, and six IGPs.
