Vineyard and terroir
The Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello) grapes come from the company's vineyards on the southeastern side of Montalcino. The area has a Mediterranean climate and is one of the warmest and driest parts of Tuscany. The vines are between 5 and 25 years old and grow in well-drained slate soils, which allow the roots to reach groundwater deep below the surface.
Vinification
The grapes are usually harvested by hand in early October. At the winery they are partially destemmed and gently pressed. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by 25 days of maceration with daily punch-downs. The wine then stays in steel tanks for around 3 months while malolactic fermentation takes place, which softens the wine and gives its aromas greater complexity and maturity.
Ageing
The 2017 vintage was aged for 6 years, including at least 48 months in Slavonian oak barrels of various sizes.
Label / history
The bottle carries a bright leather label with metal studs, designed by the American designer Denise Fosil. The wine comes in a leather case, also created by Fosil.
