Vineyard and terroir
The Chardonnay grows 100 m above sea level in mixed soils where sand predominates. The vineyard is planted at 6,000 vines per hectare. The winery stands on Sicily, 7 km from the sea, between Caltagirone and Piazza Armerina, and the estate has 40 hectares of vineyards. These are planted with local varieties, from Nero d'Avola to Frappato, and with international grapes such as Merlot and Cabernet.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand in mid-August. The must is vinified for 15 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation. The winery is equipped with modern technology and can process up to 10,000 hectolitres. Must and wine are moved into vats by gravity, a method considered particularly suitable and efficient.
Ageing
The wine ages for 8 months in barriques, 80% of them new. After bottling it rests a further 8 months in bottle. Both old and new cellars are used to age the estate's wines.
Label / history
The wine is made in collaboration with the designer Alberta Ferretti, who created its label. The Feudi del Pisciotto vineyard gave its first vintage in 2007. Although the vines were still young, every variety produced remarkable results. Paolo Panerai, who oversees the company, decided to bring the wines together in one range and turned to Italian high fashion. Each label is created by a well-known Italian designer in their own style. A portion of sales is donated to charity every year, including projects to restore Sicilian works of art and historic monuments. Feudi del Pisciotto belongs to the Domini Castellare di Castellina group.
