Vineyard and terroir
The Frappato grows at 80 metres above sea level on mixed soils with a high proportion of sand. The vineyard is planted at 5900 vines per hectare. It belongs to Feudi del Pisciotto's new vineyard, whose first harvest was in 2007. The estate lies 7 km from the sea, between Caltagirone and Piazza Armerina, on the island of Sicily.
Vinification
The must is fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, followed by malolactic fermentation. At the winery, must and wine are moved by gravity.
Ageing
The wine ages for 10 months in barriques, 50% new and 50% previously used. It then matures a further 8 months in bottle.
Label / history
Made in collaboration with the designer Brioni. Feudi del Pisciotto is a range created under Paolo Panerai, who oversees the company, and dedicated to well-known Italian designers, each of whom created a label in their own style. Each year part of the proceeds goes to charitable projects, including the restoration of Sicilian artworks and monuments. Feudi del Pisciotto is part of the Domini Castellare di Castellina group. Its winery can process up to 10 000 hectolitres and uses both old and new cellars for ageing. The estate has 40 ha of vineyards planted with local varieties, from Nero d'Avola to Frappato, and international ones such as Merlot and Cabernet.
