Vineyard and terroir

The wine brings together components associated with I Sodi di San Niccolò, Poggio ai Merli and Coniale. The vineyards stand at 350–400 m. Productive vines are 25–30 years old, trained to single-arched Guyot. Planting density ranges from 2,700 to 7,000 vines per hectare in the newer vineyards, and yield is 40–45 quintals per hectare. Harvest takes place in the second half of October.

Grapes

33% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Sangioveto and 5% Malvasia Nera.

Vinification

Vinification lasts 18–25 days in stainless steel at controlled temperature. Malolactic fermentation is carried out. Barrique is also specified in the technical description, although it appears beneath the heading for fermentation-tank material rather than maturation. Bottle ageing lasts 18 months.

Tasting profile

Deep ruby red. Red and black fruits mingle with vanilla, coffee and chocolate in an intense, deep aromatic profile. The palate has substantial structure, tempered by very fine tannins that give a velvety, harmonious texture. The finish is exceptionally long and signals considerable longevity.

Serving and pairing

Suited to full-flavoured cured meats and meat dishes, as well as aromatic cheeses, particularly Tuscan Pecorino and Parmigiano.

Label / history

Created for the estate’s 36th anniversary, this was the third occasion on which leading components from I Sodi di San Niccolò, Poggio ai Merli and Coniale were united in one blend. Its structure is balanced by the elegance and finesse associated with the selected Sangioveto used for I Sodi di San Niccolò.
