Vineyard and terroir
The soils are rocky, the site lies close to the sea and the climate is favourable. The winery stands on Sicily, 7 km from the sea, between Caltagirone and Piazza Armerina. The estate has 40 ha of vineyards planted with local varieties, from Nero d'Avola to Frappato, and with international grapes such as Merlot and Cabernet. The vineyard is new, and its vines are young.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested in the first half of October, at optimal ripeness. The must undergoes pre-fermentation maceration with frequent pump-overs, which helps the wine develop flavour, minerality and tannins. Alcoholic fermentation lasts 10 days in stainless-steel tanks at 26 °C. The winery is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and moves must and wine into tanks by gravity.
Ageing
The wine ages for 10 months in oak barriques, 50% of them new. After bottling it matures for a further 8 months in the winery's cellars. Both old and new cellars are used for ageing at Feudi del Pisciotto.
Tasting profile
Deep ruby red. Fresh fruit and light spicy notes come together on the palate. The wine has excellent structure and depth, and its polyphenol content gives it strong ageing potential.
Label / history
The label was created by the Missoni brand, known for knitwear and textiles with intricate geometric patterns. The first harvest from Feudi del Pisciotto's new vineyard was in 2007. Paolo Panerai, who oversees the company, grouped the wines in a new range linked to high fashion. The range is dedicated to well-known Italian designers, each of whom created a label in their own style. Each year part of the proceeds goes to charitable causes, including the restoration of Sicilian works of art and monuments. Feudi del Pisciotto belongs to the Domini Castellare di Castellina group, and its cellar can process up to 10,000 hectolitres.
