Vineyard and terroir

The Nero d'Avola is grown in the commune of Niscemi, in Sicily. The vineyards lie at 100 m above sea level with a south-westerly exposure and mainly sandy soils. The climate is classically Mediterranean, with plenty of sunshine and moderate rainfall, which prevents rot and mould on the grapes. Coastal breezes soften temperature changes and keep the vineyards well ventilated. Given this microclimate, only organic viticulture is practised, without chemicals or herbicides.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested by hand in the last week of September. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation.

Ageing

The wine ages for 10 months in barriques, 50% new and 50% second-use. After bottling it rests a further 8 months in the winery's cellar.

Tasting profile

Elegant and well balanced.

Label / history

The wine is inspired by Sicily's history, art, culture, natural beauty and aromas. The label was created by Versace, and a portion of the proceeds from the wine is donated to charity. Feudi del Pisciotto belongs to the Domini Castellare di Castellina group. The winery stands in Sicily, 7 km from the sea, between Caltagirone and Piazza Armerina. It can process up to 10,000 hl, and both old and new cellars are used for ageing. All must and wine are moved into the vats from above by gravity. The estate has 40 ha of vineyards planted with native varieties, from Nero d'Avola to Frappato, and international ones including Merlot and Cabernet. The labels in this collection were designed by leading Italian designers.
