Vineyard and terroir

The fruit comes from Castello Banfi's own vineyards on the southern slopes of Montalcino. The limestone soils are mixed with pebbles, which gives good drainage and encourages the vines to root deeply. This helps the grapes build flavour while keeping their natural acidity. The climate is warm and Mediterranean, with wide temperature differences between day and night. The grapes ripen fully and keep a balance between ripe fruit and freshness. The text also credits mature vines.

Grapes

The wine is 100% Sangiovese.

Vinification

Fermentation takes place in Banfi's signature Horizon vats, which combine stainless steel and wood. Temperature is controlled at 20–30 °C, and skin contact lasts around a week. This extracts colour, aroma and tannins gently and preserves freshness.

Ageing

The wine ages for around 12 months in large French oak casks of 60–90 hectolitres and in 350-litre French barriques. Further ageing in bottle follows. The large casks help retain the grape's pure character and fresh berry flavours. The barriques add subtle notes of vanilla, coffee and tobacco and give the tannins a silkier feel.

Tasting profile

Elegant, juicy and expressive, with classic Tuscan character and refined spice. Fresh berry fruit is joined by subtle vanilla, coffee and tobacco notes. The tannins are silky, and ripe fruit is balanced by freshness.

Vintage notes

The text names the 2024 vintage but gives no weather details.

Label / history

Rosso di Montalcino is often seen as the younger sibling of Brunello di Montalcino. According to the text, it has moved beyond being a lighter version of it and is now a respected category in its own right.
