Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes grow at 450 m above sea level on the 11-hectare Tenuta Prima Pietra estate near Riparbella, north of Bolgheri in Maremma. Mediterranean Sea breezes constantly cool the vines. The vineyard has gravel and iron-rich clay soils, which contribute concentration, and is planted at 9,600 vines per hectare.
Grapes
Merlot is complemented by a small proportion of Sangiovese.
Vinification
The Merlot is harvested during the first ten days of September and the Sangiovese at the end of the month. The grapes are picked by hand and transported to Montalcino for vinification. The must ferments in stainless-steel tanks for 15 days at 28 °C.
Ageing
The wine matures for six months in French barriques, 30% new, followed by another six months in bottle before release.
Tasting profile
Fresh and concentrated.
Label / history
Ferragamo bought Tenuta Prima Pietra in 2003, after which the estate became part of Castiglion del Bosco. Local oenologist Cecilia Leoneschi, who has worked at the winery since 2003, oversees the vineyards and winemaking.
