Vineyard and terroir
The vineyard area associated with the Leonardo estate lay beneath the sea around four million years ago, and ancient fossils can still be found among the vine rows. The estate had 70 hectares of vineyards in 1961; over the following 50 years, this expanded to approximately 750 hectares.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested mechanically. Traditional vinification includes fermentation for 10 days at a controlled temperature of 18 °C.
Label / history
The label depicts the face of the Mona Lisa. Both the label and the wine’s name pay tribute to Leonardo da Vinci, after whom the estate was also named.
Cantina Leonardo da Vinci was founded in 1961 when 30 small wineries joined forces, sharing their winemaking interests and the cost of constructing a large cellar. In the late 20th century, it acquired the historic estates Fattoria Montalbano and Cantina di Montalcino. DalleVigne was established in 2002 to market the Cantina’s products and distribute them to the hospitality sector in more than 50 countries; it later became part of Caviro, a cooperative founded in 1966 by independent wine producers.
