Vineyard and terroir
The vineyards around Villa da Vinci lie at 40–130 m above sea level. Their soils contain shells and Pliocene alluvial deposits; the area was seabed four million years ago, and ancient fossils can still be found among the vine rows. Vines are trained mainly using Guyot, with some Cordon and the Tuscan bow system in the oldest vineyards.
Grapes
The Syrah is selected from the vineyards around Villa da Vinci. For the 2021 vintage, a small amount of Sangiovese and Colorino was added to the blend.
Vinification
The grapes were harvested in September. Maceration on the skins lasted 8–10 days, and fermentation took place at 26–28 °C with frequent pumping over and rack-and-return.
Ageing
The wine rested for an extended period in stainless-steel tanks, followed by 4–6 months in oak barriques.
Tasting profile
The Syrah gives aromatic intensity, spice and fruit character.
Serving and pairing
Decant for one hour before serving.
Label / history
The wine belongs to a collection whose names derive from the historic names of lands once owned by Leonardo’s family. Its label reproduces a detail from The Annunciation, a painting inspired by the rolling landscape of Vinci. The 2021 vintage received a silver medal at the 2023 Berlin Wine Trophy.
