Chiarli was founded in 1860 by Cleto Chiarli, who had previously managed Trattoria dell'Artigliere in central Modena. He made Lambrusco there for the restaurant’s regular guests before beginning production for a broader market. The winery is identified as the oldest producer of Lambrusco and other wines in Emilia-Romagna.
