Vineyard and terroir
Col d’Orcia’s vineyards extend over 540 ha of hilly land on the southern slopes of Montalcino, at approximately 450 m above sea level. The site is sheltered from cold weather, hurricanes and hail, while fog, frost and late frosts are not concerns. Frequent winds from the Tyrrhenian Sea help maintain healthy vines. The Mediterranean climate brings limited rainfall in March, April, November and December, and abundant sunshine during the growing season enables slow, complete ripening. The soils contain small amounts of clay and limestone, contributing structure and elegance.
Grapes
The Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon come from newly planted vineyards and are blended with Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo to increase aromatic and flavour complexity.
Tasting profile
The 2009 has complex aromas and flavours, marked presence and excellent structure.
Label / history
Col d’Orcia was founded in 1700 and acquired in 1973 by Count Cinzano’s winemaking family. The family’s business was established in Turin in the mid-16th century, and its expertise passed from father to son. The estate’s current owner, Count Francesco Marone Cinzano, brought more than four centuries of experience in producing alcoholic drinks, together with his family’s winemaking knowledge, to Col d’Orcia.
