XXXV Masi Seminar: The Contemporary Value of a Mountain Bordeaux
Held at Vinitaly on 7 April 2025, the XXXV Masi Seminar was devoted to Fojaneghe and its development over more than six decades. Raffaele Boscaini moderated the event. Viticulture specialist Attilio Scienza examined the relationship between grape varieties, terroir and current environmental pressures, while oenologist and communicator Stefano Quaglierini discussed how complex wine histories can be communicated amid changing patterns of consumption.
Masi Director of Oenology Andrea Dal Cin and Conti Bossi Fedrigotti cellar master Dante Cavazzani presented the technical development of Fojaneghe and led a vertical tasting of the 1993, 2007, 2011, 2012 and 2016 vintages. The selected years illustrated substantial differences in seasonal conditions: dry, cool spring weather followed by September rain in 1993; a dry start, cool June, warm and ventilated July and favourable September in 2007; an unusually cold July, localized hail and hot, dry August in 2011; spring phytosanitary pressure followed by a 10 September harvest in 2012; and stable, dry summer conditions with healthy fruit in 2016.
The seminar placed the wine’s origin in Count Federico’s 1957 planting decision and its first production in 1961, while examining how its mountain identity has been maintained through changes in climate, blend composition and vinification.
