Storia

A family established in Trentino

The Bossi Fedrigotti family has lived in Trentino, at Rovereto, for almost six centuries. Its documented identity as a wine-producing dynasty dates from 1697, and the family has cultivated vines on its historic estates for more than 300 years. The properties remain associated with the Counts Bossi Fedrigotti and their long continuity in Rovereto.

Count Federico and the Fojaneghe project

In 1957, Count Federico Bossi Fedrigotti, father of the present owners, recognized the potential of Bordeaux varieties in Trentino. He planted Merlot and Cabernet on broad terraces at the Fojaneghe estate overlooking the Adige River.

The project produced its first wine in 1961. Fojaneghe became the first Bordeaux-style blend made in Italy and gave new impetus to the estate’s wine production. Count Federico’s initiative established a lasting combination of international varieties and a mountain environment, while the wine retained the name of its vineyard of origin.

The 2011 vintage marked Fojaneghe’s 50th harvest. During the wine’s development, its composition was not completely static: the 1993 edition combined Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc; the 2007, 2011 and 2012 editions also included Teroldego; by 2016 the blend again comprised Merlot and the two Cabernets.

Partnership with Masi

In 2007, Conti Bossi Fedrigotti entered into partnership with Masi Agricola. Masi subsequently assumed responsibility for the estate’s viticultural and oenological activities while the Counts Bossi Fedrigotti continued as the owners associated with the historic properties.

The contemporary range joins the estate’s historic red-wine work to several other Trentino expressions: Conte Federico Riserva Brut continues its sparkling-wine tradition; Vign’Asmara is based entirely on Chardonnay; Pian del Griso is entirely Pinot Grigio; and the Mas’Est range focuses on the native Marzemino and Teroldego varieties.

The estate in the present day

Fojaneghe remains the estate’s flagship and was the subject of the XXXV Masi Seminar on 7 April 2025 at Vinitaly. The seminar examined more than six decades of evolution, including the relationship between varieties and terroir, changes in climate, vinification and communication. A vertical tasting covered the 1993, 2007, 2011, 2012 and 2016 vintages, illustrating both continuity of identity and adjustments to individual growing seasons.

Terroir

Conti Bossi Fedrigotti’s vineyards are centred on Rovereto in Trentino, within a predominantly mountainous region shaped by Alpine chains, the Dolomites, the Adige Valley, lateral valleys and numerous bodies of water. The regional geological mosaic includes limestone, dolomite, fluvioglacial deposits and progressively looser or more clay-rich alluvial soils.

Altitude differences and air movements through the valleys and from Lake Garda create marked temperature variation and numerous microclimates. The broader pre-Alpine vineyard belt lies between 150 and 700 metres above sea level; vineyards on its slopes are commonly terraced and protected from erosion by dry-stone walls.

The estate’s most precisely identified site is Fojaneghe, where broad terraces overlook the Adige River. Merlot and Cabernet were planted there in 1957. Other estate descriptions identify east-facing slopes used for Teroldego and sites receiving the morning sun for Marzemino. Selected vineyards for Conte Federico Riserva Brut are ventilated by the Ora, the local breeze associated with Lake Garda. The estate’s mountain setting and Dolomite vineyards are linked to freshness, ventilation and substantial day–night temperature variation.

Vinificazione

Metodo ClassicoConte Federico Riserva Brut is made from Chardonnay and Pinot Nero as a Trento DOC Riserva Metodo Classico.
Light appassimentoThe native-variety Mas’Est Marzemino and Mas’Est Teroldego are refined through light appassimento.
Terraced vineyard sourcingFojaneghe comes from Merlot and Cabernet planted on broad terraces overlooking the Adige River.
Barrique maturationThe estate’s varietal Chardonnay, Vign’Asmara, is matured in oak barriques.
Technical Group oversightMasi has managed the estate’s viticultural and oenological work since the 2007 partnership.

The vineyards combine native Trentino grapes—particularly Marzemino Gentile and Teroldego—with Chardonnay, Pinot Nero, Pinot Grigio, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Teroldego occupies east-facing slopes, while Marzemino benefits from the morning sun. Fojaneghe’s Merlot and Cabernet grow on terraces overlooking the Adige.

Harvesting follows the varieties’ different ripening cycles. In recent documented seasons, Chardonnay and Pinot Nero for the Conte Federico sparkling-wine base were picked from mid-August or immediately after the Ferragosto period. Pinot Grigio for Pian del Griso and Chardonnay for Vign’Asmara followed, while Teroldego, Marzemino and the other red grapes were scheduled for early or mid-September.

The 2022 crop showed healthy fruit with good acidity under the estate’s local soil and climatic conditions. In 2024, a sharp temperature fall at the end of April reduced the quantity of grapes available for Conte Federico, although quality remained intact. In 2025, the sparkling base combined excellent yields with excellent quality; Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay followed in the picking sequence, with Teroldego and Marzemino due several days later.

Since 2007, Masi Agricola has managed the estate’s viticultural and oenological activities through its Technical Group, working with the Conti Bossi Fedrigotti cellar.

The production portfolio uses several distinct methods. Fojaneghe is assembled from Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon grown in its namesake vineyard; historical vintages show that Teroldego was also included in some periods. Conte Federico Riserva Brut is made as Trento DOC Riserva Metodo Classico from Chardonnay and Pinot Nero, continuing the estate’s sparkling-wine tradition. Vign’Asmara is a varietal Chardonnay matured in oak barriques, while Pian del Griso is a varietal Pinot Grigio.

Both Mas’Est reds apply light appassimento: Marzemino Gentile produces Mas’Est Marzemino, and Teroldego from east-facing estate slopes produces Mas’Est Teroldego. This measured drying treatment is used to refine the two native-variety wines without displacing their Trentino identity.

Filosofia

Conti Bossi Fedrigotti’s contemporary direction joins family continuity to technical evolution. Its defining historical decision—planting Bordeaux varieties at Fojaneghe in 1957—was an innovation rooted in a particular Trentino site rather than an attempt to reproduce another region unchanged.

The present approach seeks to preserve that identity while responding to changing growing conditions. Fojaneghe is treated as both a guardian of tradition and a wine capable of evolving through climate variation, adjustments in varietal composition and contemporary cellar practice. Masi’s stated objective for the estate is to safeguard and update this tradition, maintaining the relationship between terroir, varieties and an elegant mountain-wine profile.

The wider range follows the same balance: international varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Merlot and Cabernet coexist with the native Marzemino and Teroldego, while methods range from Metodo Classico and barrique maturation to light appassimento.
