Label / history
The name Mille e una Notte means “One Thousand and One Nights”. The first vintage was released in 1995.
The label depicts, beneath a starry sky, the palace in Santa Margherita Belice where Queen Maria Carolina took refuge after fleeing Naples. The palace was also a favourite place of the Italian writer Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa. Gabriella Rallo selected the image for the label.
Donnafugata means “the woman who fled” in Italian, referring to the legend of Queen Maria Carolina’s escape from Naples and refuge in the Santa Margherita Belice valley. This story also accounts for the windblown female head appearing on many Donnafugata labels.
The wine received a bronze medal at Vinalies Internationales in Paris in 2001.
