Grapes
The blend combines native Sicilian grapes with international varieties. Gabriella was particularly devoted to Ansonica and believed in its full flavour and appealing aroma; she oversaw the development of a wine centred on the variety.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested at night.
Label / history
Vigna di Gabri takes its name from Gabriella, who founded Donnafugata with her husband, Giacomo, and initiated the wine’s development. It was first released in 1987.
A new label introduced in 2004 depicts the relationship between Gabriella, her vineyards and Ansonica. The Donnafugata name means “woman in flight” and refers to a legend in which Queen Maria Carolina fled Naples and took refuge in a palace in the Santa Margherita Belice valley. This story also inspired the windblown female figure found on many Donnafugata labels.
