Label / history
A polena is a carved wooden figure, usually female, placed on the bows of galleons during the 16th and 17th centuries to watch over the voyage and protect the ship from misfortune. The wine presents a new female face within Donnafugata’s range.
The name Donnafugata means “woman in flight” in Italian. According to legend, Queen Maria Carolina fled Naples and took refuge in a palace beneath the stars in a town at the heart of the Santa Margherita Belice valley. This story inspired the wind-swept female heads that appear on many Donnafugata labels. The Rallo family had made wine for 150 years before establishing Donnafugata as a more modern winery.
