Vineyard and terroir
Fico is produced from the Gugliaie vineyard at San Casciano in Val di Pesa, a south-facing site distinguished by a fig tree and ground rich in river pebbles. The fruit from this parcel balances flavour and structure. Planting density is 5,000 vines per hectare, with Guyot training and biodynamic cultivation.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese. The wine is organic, biodynamic in approach, vegan, and entirely produced and bottled at origin in San Casciano Val di Pesa.
Vinification
The grapes are destemmed manually. Natural fermentation takes place in open barriques for 16 days, with the cap punched down by hand every day.
Ageing
Ageing varies according to the vintage. The 2018 remained for nine months in the same barriques used for fermentation.
Technical data
Alcohol: 14%.
Tasting profile
Bright red with purple reflections. The supple, elegant nose foregrounds rose petals, lavender and helichrysum, followed by liquorice; spice and fruit emerge with considerable energy. The palate is multidimensional and lively, carrying redcurrant and pomegranate through pepper, cardamom and a balsamic note of dried mint. Juicy freshness shapes the rhythmic finish, joined by fine tannins and enveloping woodland impressions of boxwood and humus.
Vintage notes
Ageing is adapted to each vintage; the 2018 spent nine months in the fermentation barriques.
Label / history
Fico began with the 2015 harvest. The project grew from Filippo Corsini’s experiences during a year of working and travelling around the world and his wish to create wine in harmony with nature and the biological cycles of the vine. “Fico” is both an acronym of Filippo Corsini and a reference to the fig tree identifying the Gugliaie vineyard. The label was designed by his aunt, Fiona Corsini di San Giuliano.
