Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from a single vineyard of about 1 ha on Gorgona, the smallest island in the Tuscan Archipelago. Set within a natural amphitheatre, the site is sheltered from strong sea winds and farmed organically. The island’s winds—Grecale, Sirocco, Libeccio and Mistral—influence air temperature and grape ripening.
Vinification
The wine is produced in small batches. In 2024, Vermentino harvesting began in the second week of September, followed by Ansonica in the second week of October.
Ageing
The wine matures for seven months in barriques and stainless-steel tanks.
Vintage notes
Ahead of the 2024 growing season, heavy rain began in mid-October and continued through November and the first half of December, with temperatures slightly above normal. The winter of 2024 was among the warmest of recent years, averaging 12–15 °C with only occasional cold days. January was dry, while rain returned during most of February.
Vermentino began budding in the second half of March, followed by the later-ripening Ansonica. Heavy rain arrived in early April, and cooler conditions during the second half of the month slowed vine development. A relatively cool June preceded a hot summer, moderated by occasional rain and a steady sea breeze. The harvest was later than in previous years; falling temperatures in September contributed to slow, gradual ripening.
Label / history
Produced since 2012, Gorgona is made through a partnership between Frescobaldi and the island’s correctional facility. Prisoners work alongside Frescobaldi’s agronomists and winemakers, acquiring skills intended to support their reintegration into society after release.
The twelfth label was dedicated to the four winds that shape daily life on the island: Grecale, Sirocco, Libeccio and Mistral.
