Aged for 12 months in barrels and a further 2 months in bottle, so that aromas and flavours develop harmoniously.
Tasting profile
Powerful yet elegant, with a modern character that stays true to its region. Even when young it shows maturity, depth and a firm structure, balanced by lively, fresh and very pleasant acidity.
Label / history
The wine comes from Tenuta Castiglioni, one of Italy's oldest estates, linked to the Frescobaldi family's winemaking since 1300. The family began making distinctly Tuscan wines here. These were held in high regard at the Papal Court and, in 1500, at the English court of Henry VIII. The Frescobaldi coat of arms shows Castiglioni alongside a crown, a shield and three fortresses, honouring the place where the family's winemaking began 700 years ago. The wine is the estate's flagship.
Frescobaldi supplied wine to the English Crown and other European courts in the 14th century. From the second half of the 20th century the family helped develop Tuscan winemaking, and was among the first to plant varieties such as Chardonnay, Cabernet, Merlot and Pinot, and to introduce new winemaking methods. In 1989 it acquired the largest estate in the Brunello region. In 1995 it agreed a joint venture in Tuscany with a Californian winery. Today it owns nine estates in Tuscany and exports to more than 60 countries.
