Grapes

Sangiovese and Vermentino Nero.

Vinification

The grapes are vinified on the island.

Ageing

Tasting profile

Gorgona Rosso 2023 has an intense, vibrant ruby-red colour. Its lively yet elegant bouquet opens with ripe red and black fruit, followed by juniper, myrtle, thyme, oregano and mastic, with refined spice on the finish. On the palate, bright acidity is integrated with a soft texture, while the tannins are present and velvety. The wine is balanced, with close correspondence between aroma and flavour, and continues to evolve.

Vintage notes

After a very rainy autumn, with precipitation concentrated mainly in November and early December, the 2023 winter was relatively dry; only isolated showers arrived in January. Early-year temperatures exceeded seasonal averages and occasionally reached 20 °C around midday. Cooler, wetter conditions in May helped replenish soil-water availability after the dry winter. Summer warmed gradually, but the sea prevented extreme temperatures. August was unusually cool until temperatures rose during its final ten days. Sunny, warm September weather maintained healthy grapes, and harvesting continued through the first week of October to achieve optimal ripeness.

Label / history

The Gorgona Project began in August 2012 as a collaboration between Frescobaldi and Gorgona, Europe’s only island prison. Inmates nearing the end of their sentences work with Frescobaldi agronomists and oenologists, developing viticultural skills intended to support their reintegration into employment and society.

Gorgona Rosso debuted with the 2015 harvest. Its label is dedicated to rehabilitation and the hope that the viticultural experience gained by the inmates will help them begin a new chapter after returning to society.
