Vineyard and terroir

The vineyards have Eocene soils rich in granite and sandstone. The Ribolla Gialla vineyards lie on southeast-facing slopes, while the Tocai Friulano and Riesling Renano vineyards face northwest. The varieties are traditional white grapes grown in Villanova di Farra, and the vineyards receive plenty of sunlight. One of the most important sites is in Venco, less than a mile from the Slovenian border, in the shadow of a small church dedicated to Saint Helena on a hilltop overlooking the region. Silvio Jermann personally supervises every vineyard. Grapes are traditionally grown in small quantities, so the vines can be monitored closely through the year.

Vinification

The grapes are always left to reach maximum ripeness, which gives the wine balanced aromas and a rich flavour. After harvest they are gently pressed, and the must ferments in stainless-steel tanks at a strictly controlled temperature for 7–10 days.

Ageing

After fermentation the wine is aged for 6 months in small Slavonian oak barrels.

Tasting profile

Rich, complex and beautifully balanced, with a refined, intriguing bouquet.

Label / history

The first vintage, in 1983, marked the birth of Silvio's second son, Michele, and the 100th anniversary of the Jermann winery. The name comes from the Italian "vinnaiolio", meaning "winemakers", a reference to the Jermann family's five generations of winemaking. In 2004 the label was redesigned to show a two-headed eagle. The image came from an old barrel that belonged to Silvio's great-great-grandfather, Anton Jermann, and symbolises the family's Austro-Hungarian origins.
