The Nebbiolo-based vermouth we wanted
More than 30 years before the project, eight-year-old Sara spent summer weeks with her maternal grandmother Maria at Podio, between Bene Vagienna and Monforte. After lunch, Maria prepared the “Birra del Podio”: ice, soda and vermouth served in cut-glass tumblers. Its sweetness, freshness and bitter wormwood character remained bound to Sara's memory of her grandmother.
When a gifted bottle of vermouth revived that memory decades later, Sara involved the cellar team in creating an unconventional Nebbiolo-based version. They spent two years choosing a partner and ultimately worked with The Spiritual Machine and Distilleria Magnoberta. The first bottle carrying the Sara Vezza line label was completed in August 2021.
Artist Rita Barbero, known as Purple Rita, then created a collectible edition of 49 bottles. The figure combines Sara's age at her first vermouth, eight, with her age at the first production, 41. The continuing concept pairs a new annual label with the story of Maria, the young Sara and her later life.
