Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from 12-year-old vines in the Casanova and Sezzana vineyards in Toscana, at an altitude of 250 m.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested in mid-September and carefully sorted. Fermentation is followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine is neither filtered nor clarified.
Ageing
The wine matures for 24 months in 600 L oak barrels, followed by 10 months in steel tanks before bottling and a further six months in the winery’s cellars. It is released three and a half years after the harvest.
Label / history
As on the estate’s other wines, the label features a rhinoceros reproduced from the drawing and woodcut by German artist Albrecht Dürer. Although La Spinetta has no direct connection to rhinoceroses, producer Giorgio Rivetti was drawn to the story behind the work.
In 1515, the governor of India gave a rhinoceros to the King of Portugal. A fight was apparently staged between the rhinoceros—an animal not previously seen in Europe—and an elephant, which is thought to have fled, leaving the rhinoceros the winner. A description of the animal subsequently reached Germany. Dürer, who had never seen it, is believed to have based his drawing and woodcut on sketches. European illustrators borrowed elements from his imaginative depiction for the next 300 years, even after living rhinoceroses became available for them to observe.
