Vineyard and terroir
Campo Alto was introduced as a new bottling with the 2009 vintage. The associated Brunello technical information places the estate vineyards at Santa Restituta, with west- and south-west-facing slopes at 320–410 m. The soils include marl, galestro, limestone, calcareous sandstone and marine deposits. Vines are trained to spurred cordon and Guyot at 6,200 plants per hectare.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese from various clones.
Vinification
All vineyard and cellar operations are manual. Perfectly mature grapes are selected and harvested into 20 kg crates. Fermentation uses indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled vats, with pump-overs and manual punch-downs.
Ageing
The associated Brunello protocol calls for maturation of up to three years in 500 and 4,000 L French oak, followed by at least six months in bottle.
Tasting profile
Campo Alto 2009 shows morello cherry, damson plum, tar and coffee on the nose. The medium-full palate is rich through the middle, with clear varietal character and pronounced persistence. Other descriptions add dark chocolate, berries, mushrooms, spice, floral and citrus nuances. It is full-bodied, with firm tannins and a long finish, while another assessment describes the palate as agile and responsive.
Vintage notes
The 2009 was the first Campo Alto bottling. It received four stars from Tom Hyland, 92 points from James Suckling, four bottles in Vini d’Italia 2015, four stars from La Repubblica and a Decanter recommendation. Suggested development was 12–15 years, while James Suckling advised drinking or holding.
