Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from vines planted in 1972 and 1982 on a 2.5 ha site with southern and southeastern exposure. The Montevertine estate is in Radda, in the heart of Chianti. The grapes are harvested by hand.
Vinification
Fermentation lasts 21 days in glass-lined cement tanks, which are also used for malolactic fermentation. The wine is clarified naturally by settling and is neither filtered nor stabilized. No pumps are used during bottling.
Ageing
The wine matures for 24 months in Slavonian oak barrels, followed by around three months in bottle.
Tasting profile
Elegant and uncomplicated.
Vintage notes
In 2018, heavy rain and hail caused particular damage to plots planted with Sangiovese. This was followed by favourable summer weather, with hot days and cooler nights, resulting in a strong, healthy crop. The season’s red wines had juicy fruit, good acidity and structure.
Label / history
From 1971 to 1981, the wine was released as “Montevertine” Chianti Classico. In 1982, Sergio Manetti left the Chianti Classico consortium and relinquished DOC status so that he and Giulio Gambelli could work freely with Sangiovese, Colorino and Canaiolo. Their aim was to demonstrate that Sangiovese could stand without Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon; the resulting wine took the simple name “Montevertine.”
