Vineyard and terroir
The fruit is selected from three vineyards at Tenuta Poggio Casciano in the hills near Florence. The sites stand at 290–450 m above sea level. The general wine page describes soils rich in clay, limestone and gravel, while the 2021 technical sheet specifies abundant clay and limestone with smaller amounts of silt. Small parcels are harvested separately—even within the same vineyard—to express the site and each variety more precisely.
Grapes
Blend proportions vary by vintage. Latest published vintage (2021): 38% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Sangiovese.
Vinification
The varieties are harvested separately as each reaches optimal ripeness. In 2021, the Merlot harvest began in early September; Sangiovese followed in the second half of September, and Cabernet Sauvignon in the first half of October. Alcoholic fermentation took place in stainless-steel vats for 10 days. Skin maceration then continued for 15 days for Sangiovese, 20 days for Merlot and 25 days for Cabernet Sauvignon. Malolactic fermentation occurred in temperature-controlled steel tanks before barrel ageing.
Ageing
Approximately 18 months in new French oak barriques. Barrels from several coopers are used so that the oak does not overwhelm the wine.
Tasting profile
The 2021 is intense ruby red. Plum and ripe black cherry aromas are complemented by sweet vanilla and coconut. The palate is soft, round, dense and velvety.
The broader release description gives a deep garnet and ruby color. Mature black fruit defines the bouquet, with the varieties individually discernible yet integrated and discreet oak completing the aroma. The palate is generous and complex, moving from a dark core to a radiant finish. High, precise tannins shape a notably clear conclusion.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18–20 °C. Pair with Italian or international meat dishes and aged cheeses.
Vintage notes
The 2021 season combined well-distributed spring rainfall with favorable harvest weather. It was the first vintage certified organic.
Label / history
Modus Primo is a further evolution of Modus, selecting the finest expression of Poggio Casciano in each vintage. Its first vintage was 2018. The parent name Modus derives from Latin words meaning “method” and “measure.”
