Vineyard and terroir
The estate’s vineyards are in Oslavia, in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, near the border with the Republic of Slovenia. They cover 12 hectares of clay soils containing fragments of rock. The dense, low-growing vines are planted at 6,500–10,000 vines per hectare. The vineyards are farmed organically, without chemical fertilisers or pesticides and with minimal disturbance to the vines.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand when fully ripe, then sorted and destemmed. Fermentation takes place naturally on the skins in oak barrels, using native yeasts and without temperature control. The cap is punched down three or four times daily. After alcoholic fermentation, the wine remains on the skins for three to four months in sealed vats. No sulphur is added, and the wine is neither fined nor filtered.
Ageing
The wine is transferred to large, wide Slovenian oak barrels holding 25–35 hl and aged on its lees for up to 40 months.
Tasting profile
The wine has a natural flavour and a powerful, complex and layered aroma.
Label / history
Stanko Radikon has owned the estate since 1980. His winemaking methods follow practices used in the region before the 1930s. With the oenologist Edi Kante, he developed storage bottles with narrow necks and magnum-like proportions, sealed with high-quality corks made from a special cork oak with very thin bark. The bottles were introduced in 2002.
